Because Mr. Basu could not able to read the newspaper due to poor eyesight, Otima produced deeper patience and love for her husband. à à à à à à à à à à à From the time when their house had no electricity due to electric problems, the two went to the terrace and decided to stay there until the electricity comes back but when the electricity went back, Mr. Basu refused to go back inside the house for it was the time of preparation of leaving. Mr. Basu accepted the fact that his life will soon vanish and become part of heaven. The pigeons in the terrace where Mr. Basu died symbolize his spirit and his journey in the next life. à à à à à à à à à à à The story is simple yet attackable. Its tragic situation brought life to the whole story. Then, with a swirl and flutter of feathers, a flock of pigeons hurtled upwards and spread out against the dome of the sky ââ¬â opalescent, sunlit, like small pearls (Desai 228). There after the application will be sent for approval to the concerned Department, once the application is approved a written letter is sent to Employee Giving the details of Staff Quarters that is allotted to him. This entire process used to take around 30-45 days as there are around 10000 employees in the Organization. But with the automation of this process, The Staff Quarter Allotment would be completed in 2-3 days. Employees Fill in an online Staff Quarter Application and submit it then the application is routed to his administrator immediately for approval and the moment Administrator approves the Application the application status is updated on the application and the employee can see the status on his application. As this entire process is online so it is advantageous to both the employees and the Organization as it saves allotment time to a great extent and it also removes all the tedious manual approach as well as maintaining data on paper which can be lost anytime. The allotment process would be transparent to users as well as the management. Issues of change: Reluctance from Users: We have faced few issues from the users as they were reluctant to use Staff Quarter online Facility provide by us since the users are not aware of the online process. We had to train users to use the online staff Quarter Allotment Application but we have faced a big reluctance from the users as they were not Comfortable using the online system. 2) Reluctance from administrators: Administrators were very reluctant to follow online process for Staff Quarters Allotment since online system clearly exposes transparency involved in manual process. The Word Transparency here deserves a bit of explanation here. The Administrators can use malpractices for approving Staff Quarters Applications. Malpractices include bribing, bias towards applicants, etc.. But because of the strong management support we got from New India Assurance we were able to conduct the training for users and to our surprise the users really shown a great interest in training when we explained them the advantages of online system over manual process. we were finally successful in completing the user training on a high note. This task wouldnt have been possible without support from New India Assurance management team and combined team effort of our developers, trainer and team leader. When compared to this change in my organization all the changes were made in an step by step process. Identify and describe three reasons why there may be a physician shortage rather than a surplus in the U.S. William & Torrens (2010) provided a table to show the first time since 1965, between 2000 and 2005, there was a slight decrease in the ratio of physicians per 100,000 civilian populations. The three reasons why there is a physician shortage rather than a surplus in the United States is caused first of all by more restrictive elements that have been blunted due to widespread physician and patient dissatisfaction, particularly with limits of choice (Williams & Torrens, page 270). The move away from more efficient forms of organized medical practice commonly means that more physicians will be necessary to deliver the same level of care (Mick, 2004). Physicians and patients seem to prefer choice to efficiency, which will add pressure for more physicians and is the first of several possible factors fueling fears of a new shortage (Williams & Torrens, page 270). The second reason for the physician shortage in the United States is was a larger percentage of women in medical school. Wome n still do a majority of the tasks surrounding the raising of children and maintaining a home, leaving less time available for practice (Williams & Torrens, page 270). This demographic shift with the workforce may produce more pressure for more than fewer physicians (Williams & Torrens, page 270). Third, physician preferences now favor a more ââ¬Å"controllable lifestyleâ⬠(Williams & Torrens, page 270). Young physicians today seek career opportunities with weekends off limiting the hours worked per week. Both tasks the two men set out to achieve are things never done before and include overcoming the power of nature. Victor, challenges death, trying to create a new being, and Walton tries to challenge the elements to reach to pole. Victor finds first, that doing this can only bring destruction, ââ¬Ëthe ever varied powers of natureââ¬â¢, a warning that it is too powerful to challenge. This warning, he then passes onto Walton who realises the peril he faces, and abandons his exploration. The ââ¬Å"Ancient Marinerâ⬠was a poem written around this time by Coleridge. Coleridge was a Romantic, as was Shelleyââ¬â¢s husband, and poems like this one were popular as this portrayed the types of things people were thinking about around that time. Mary Shelley may have been influenced by this poem about the theme of challenging nature as the poem also talks of this. It also included a ââ¬Ëfrightful fiendââ¬â¢ similar to the Frankensteinââ¬â¢s creature. Nature is also linked into another theme of loneliness both of the monster and Victor. The creature tries to tell Victor how he has been rejected and is totally alone saying things such as ââ¬ËI see bliss from which I alone am irrevocably excludedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëalone miserablyââ¬â¢. The creatureââ¬â¢s isolation could be found as a reason for his crimes as he never had anyone who he could interact with so he has never learnt how to do it, the creatureââ¬â¢s isolation therefore leads to destruction. Every time the creature tries to make friends he is pushed further and further into isolation until he is in the most isolated place on earth, the North Pole. Using the vast open snowy mountains as the creature inhabits allows the feeling of only him being there and no one else being anywhere near as the monster describes to his creator that, ââ¬Ëdreary glaciers are my refugeââ¬â¢. Arguably, Mary Shelley might have been inspired, as she wrote ââ¬ËFrankensteinââ¬â¢, while staying in Italy in a remote place in the mountains. Shelley also shows the isolation that Victor forced onto himself, rejecting company. This means there is no one there to make him do the right thing so he continues to make horrific mistakes. The monster and Victor are isolated together at the end and only have each other. When Victor dies, his creation kills himself as the last person who could accept him and give him reason for his existence has died, and he no longer wishes to be lonely. The reason for this loneliness is simply because of the way that he looks, that people are ââ¬Ëprejudiced againstââ¬â¢ him and only ââ¬Ëbehold a detestable monsterââ¬â¢. Mary Shelley uses this to make the audience feel sorry for him and to show the reader that he has emotions just like a human. Much of this book criticises man for judging on appearance and shows that appearance and reality can be very different. The creature is ugly and deformed making him seem frightening to people where as all that he really wants is a friend and someone to love him like he describes to the blind man he has ââ¬Ëno relation or friend upon earthââ¬â¢. On the complete opposite to this Victor Frankenstein is seen as a rational scientist but turns out to be an irrational obsessive. Mary Shelley is trying to get the point across that things are not always as they seem. Another important theme is that of the horror of child birth. In chapter five when Frankenstein gives birth to the creature, he immediately rejects it and is in a sense rejecting his ââ¬Å"babyâ⬠. The monster in a sense has lost his ââ¬Å"motherâ⬠at child birth and so is lonely. This was a very personal subject that Shelley decided to include within the book as she must have felt similar feeling to the creature after losing her own mother at child birth. She is showing through the creature how lonely it feels not to be loved by a creator or mother. Through the chapters when the monster is recounting his story to his creator he is trying to get Victor to take his responsibilities of creator and love his creation calling Victor his ââ¬Ënatural lord and kingââ¬â¢ The monster also shows the similarities between Victor and God being the creators and himself and Adam the first creations trying to explain this to Frankenstein saying to him, ââ¬ËI ought to be thy Adamââ¬â¢ At this point Victor believes in the total opposite, and wants nothing to do with his creation that he now regrets, trying to rid the monster telling him ââ¬Ëthere can be no community between you and meââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ëwe are enemiesââ¬â¢ it is only later on when he starts to listen and feel for his creation that he ââ¬Ëfelt what the duties of a creator towards his creature wereââ¬â¢ and that he ââ¬Ëought to render himââ¬â¢. I think that to many people Frankenstein is one of the most well known horror stories including all of the ingredie nts to frighten the audience. To me, I believe that Frankenstein is much less a horror story as it is a novel that questions our society and the people living in it. The old man tells the monster ââ¬Ëthe hearts of men, when unprejudiced by any obvious self-interest, are full of brotherly love and charityââ¬â¢. Throughout this book this quote is proved untrue. That people are always kind and giving when it does not interfere with their own interests, is shown as wrong. This book criticizes society and man, how prejudiced we are and the greed for fame. Although this book was written nearly 200 years ago the same messages still apply to todayââ¬â¢s modern society. Life processes – Biodiversity
Often referred to as ââ¬Å"Ecosystemsâ⬠, Biomes are environments that differ depending on certain factors such as plant life, human presence (which will increase or decrease the pollution levels depending on the advancement of the civilization) and weather/climate. Biomes are easier to define in the worlds of biology, ecology, and biogeography than areas of the planet that have been sectioned and defined by the presence of humans. There are 6 basic terrestrial and aquatic biomes, these can be categorised into Freshwater, Marine, Desert, Forest, Grassland and Tundra. Every different type of ecosystem is unique unto itself, with forms of plant life and animal species that are found only within them. The animals collect in these environment and they rely on the plants for food or shelter or both. Other major factors within a biome are the existence of clean water and suitable weather conditions that these animals can live comfortably in, without these factors, the ecosystem would fail. Biodiversity exists within a biome, this is used to categorise the different types of life within them. Sub definitions are food-chains, placing predatory animals that feed on lesser able animals higher up. Below is an example of a food chain in the rainforest. (1) A food web is a more detailed way of connecting food chains. A food chain diagram, like the one located to the left can only depict a simple staged diagram, whereas a food chain can show how many different types of wildlife can survive on different. Many animals eat more than one thing, a way of showing this is to illustrate it in a food web. An example of one can be seen below. (3) Animals multiply and thrive in some places better than others, for example, varieties of insects that rely on certain types of abiotic climates such as the warm and humid types found in rainforests, would not be able to survive in a desert environment as the conditions there would not provide them with the adequate plant life they need in order to survive both for food and shelter. Using the diagram located to the left it is possible to view some of the more widely known wildlife in this particular ecosystem, however if one were to compare this particular environment to one on the opposite end of the scale, for example, the desert, the wildlife, plant life and factors of human interference would be dramatically different. Rainforests have long been affected by the presence of man and as a result have diminished in size dramatically; this has a direct result on the ecosystems found within them. Our continuing harvesting of wood from trees and the use of land for grazing purposes for farms and such has reached a deadly climax for many species and has forced the wildlife and animal life to adapt to the changes and although they continue to live within these ever changing environments, some species have not. According to sources between 30-100 species of animals, including birds, mammals, fish and insects are being wiped out every single day due to human interference in their habitats (2) The question of which biome has the highest and lowest biodiversity is one that is in constant competition within scientists. Some believe it to be the marine biome as some say there are more variations of plant and marine life and it is the largest, covering two thirds of the earth's surface. Another point directly relating to this particular decision is the affect of humans on the biome. Humans pollute the seas daily, this is not in contention, however the sheer volume of area within which these species survive is not as affected as the land as humans cannot affect as much of it as they cannot access it all. Another argument is that the neotropical climate of climate of Costa Rica puts it at the top, it has over 500,000 different types of species, approximately 300,000 of these are insects. An example of adapting within biomes is that of squirrels. Traditionally found in Britain are the Red and Grey squirrel, the latter of which was introduced to Britain around 130 years ago. The community of the red squirrel is under threat due to the grey squirrel, they raid the food hordes of the red's and as a result their numbers are dwindling. The red squirrel is unable to digest acorns unlike their foreign cousins form across the seas, as a result, the red squirrel is unable to survive in many of the oak laden wooded areas around Britain, over time the red squirrel has found its niche and now, although greatly outnumbered, approx 2. 5 million greys to 160,000 red, the population have survived in man made habitats such as the one on the Isle of Wight and in North East England, Scotland & Wales. Being born and raised in Blean, Canterbury, a regular family outing would be to take regular treks through Blean woods. This is a perfect example of a local ecosystem and evidence of biodiversity. Blean woods spans over 3,000 hectares and within its boundaries thrive many different types of wildlife. Nature reserves have been set up including an RSPB base and guided walks are available on most days, taking nature lovers deep into its terrain to understand, view and record the process of nature that dwells within. The woods themselves are a popular attraction with tourists that travel from far and wide, many of which are people who have come to discover Canterbury and wish to find out more about the surrounding areas. The area itself is maintained by charitable organisations and funded by donations and it is important to understand the financial benefit that these woods have on the area and how much people depend on them. The Conifer tree is the breed of tree that is found the least in these particular woods but there are sanctuaries within it that breed these trees.
